Your DOS version has at least two bugs deep in the game, one that stopped me from finishing the game.
A better solution is to use hitchhik.z5 and then use Frotz which works well. The first program that I found for running z5 files was very buggy, but this program is good. This program is superior to the original game for many reasons, including being able to save with names greater than 8 letters, being able to look at past activity by scrolling back, and being able to use the up arrow to repeat a past command (great for correcting typos).

'On the beginning i didn't give sandwich to dog and i couldn't complete the game'
Later in the game, when you are playing Ford, you have a chance to buy the sandwich and then give it to Arthur.

This game sparked a large part of what drove me to learn about computers. I enjoyed the Apple II version. I then read all of Douglas Adams books. He was a true artist of language and humor.

I have the original game for Commodore 64, it IS an hilarious take on the original story. I tried the game without knowing anything about it. That was a mistake. I am going to try it again... might pull out my C=128-D and play.
Great game, HIGHLY recommended. I like the Zork I II and III series. I had starfall, the Leather Goddess of Phobos, The Enchanter, Suspended, Wishbringer I'm a real fan of Infocom, and gonna have fun!!!
Thanks for this!!!

A purely text game. You really need to know the book to play well IMHO.

A lot of these old text games only include the .dat or .z# file.
Since there are no executables for DOS, using http://nitfol.sourceforge.net/ will run them. (I have a multi-core CPU with Win7 Ultimate Edition, and it works fine.)
http://www.ifwiki.org/index.php/Category:Interpreter has a list of interpreters for other IF games, but I haven't used any others yet.
